What is MRI?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses safe magnetic fields to produce very clear pictures of the body. MRI is the best diagnostic test that can differentiate between bone, soft tissue, gas, fluids and fat. MRI provides your pet with the latest diagnostic technology as would be available for the rest of your family.
Why should my animal companion get an MRI?
When you bring your pet to your veterinarian for an evaluation, an examination is performed and diagnostic tests may be necessary. Often other tests cannot provide sufficient information to determine an accurate diagnosis. However, MRI provides the extra detail needed for your veterinarian to make the most accurate decision possible.

MRI has replaced the need for invasive testing procedures such as the myelogram. Myelograms have been used to detect spine related conditions. This test required athe injection of dye around the spinal cord. The information provided has been limited. Myelograms can produce seizures and are occasional fatality.
MRI gives the best visualization of the spine and spinal cord possible. It is noninvasive. There are no needles injected into the spine as a myelogram requires. MRI tells your veterinarian whether the condition in the spine is from a disc herniation, infection, loss of blood supply to the spinal cord, tumors or other conditions.
MRI is excellent at detecting soft tissue injuries and tumors in the
extremities. MRI of the brain allows the veterinarian to determine if a
seizure or weakness is being caused by condition such as a tumor. In addition,
MRI is very useful to determine the response to treatment and whether the
tumor has regressed.
Who should order the MRI study?
Veterinary medicine education today includes learning the proper indications for MRI application. This technology requires the veterinarian to keep current by reading the latest literature and attending education seminars that educate about MRI. Veterinary Imaging Center is also committed to educating the veterinarian community. If you have questions, Veterinary Imaging Center could help direct you to a veterinarian facility near you that is familiar with MRI services.
Is the MRI safe?
YES, MRI is the safest diagnostic test available today! It can replace the need for multiple tests that could be painful or expose your pet to harmful radiation. MRI can often avoid unnecessary exploratory surgery.
